The 2009 local golf season will get underway tomorrow with the annual Guyana Oil Company (Guyoil) sponsored Medal Play tournament at the Lusignan Golf Club with most of the country’s top players expected to take part.
Following recent incessant rain that left the Lusignan course unplayable, the ground staff under the supervision of Mike Mangal has returned the course to its former glory for what players and officials anticipate to be a busy season.
Club Secretary Ronald Bulkan disclosed that approximately 36 golfers are expected to compete this weekend.
He said the course was in fine shape and that he had sent out a call to the regular players as well as persons interested in the game to attend tomorrow’s tournament.
The Guyoil tournament was originally scheduled for last December but was postponed because of the inclement weather, Bulkan said.
Tomorrow’s starting line up is expected to include Patrick Prashad who won last Saturday’s Club tournament, Mark Lashley and Gavin Todd, second and third placed finishers respectively at last week’s tournament.
The field is also likely to include 2008 Guyana Open champion Imran Khan, Colin Ming, Brian Glasford, Maurice Solomon, Joann Deo, Brian Hackett, Bulkan, Jerome Khan, Andre Cummings, Carlos Adams, Dr. Ram Singh, Mike Mangal, Chatterpaul Deo, Clifford Reis, Lester Alves, Alfred Mentore, Christine Sukhram, Esau Shamshudin and Albert Semple.
