Following on the heels of the President’s College invitational tournament, the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall will be buzzing with activity from 13:00hrs when the National Sports Commission Inter-secondary School Invitational Mashramani Basketball tournament bounces off today.
Seventeen schools drawn from Georgetown, East Coast, East and West Bank Demerara and divided into four groups will be vying for top honours when the action bounces off from 14:00hrs, following opening remarks from Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Dr. Frank Anthony and Minister of Education Sheik Baksh.
All the preliminary round matches will be played on a round robin basis, with the top two teams of each group advancing to the semi-finals which will be played on a knockout basis in this inaugural tournament that will be an annual feature.
Trophies for the first, second and third place finishers are up for grabs while seven individual prizes inclusive of most rebounds and steal (round robin and knockout stages), least amount of fouls (round robin), most assist and finals MVP are also at stake.
The organizers will be using the CASH today and tomorrow to its fullest extent, with tomorrow’s action commencing from 10:00hrs while the other preliminary round matches will be played at the same venue from 15:30hrs next Monday to Friday.
The third place playoff and finals will be played at the same venue on 22nd February from 16:00hrs.
Director of Sports Neil Kumar is slated to conduct the jump ball for the first game today.
