Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport (MCYS) Dr. Frank Anthony is pleased with the turn out of schools participating in the National Sports Commission Mashramani basketball competition.
So pleased was the minister with the 17 male teams participating in the inter- secondary schools invitational tournament that he promised incentives for the top two teams.
“For (the team) winning this competition and runner-up, I promise you that a special package will be given to your school,” Minister Anthony disclosed whilst indicating that the package might be some basketballs or possibly some backboards.
And, Director of Sport, Neil Kumar, deputizing for Minister of Education, Shaikh Baksh, said that it was the minister’s pleasure to support such a programme.
The 17 male teams were divided into four groups.
There are also three female teams participating.
And, Dr. Anthony suggested that clubs should have their referees and umpires’ fees waived and promised the students that if they could show enthusiasm during this competition, such initiatives will be taken by his ministry.
Kumar said a larger competition was planned for July with the aim of making same an annual event.
