High tides yesterday damaged a koker at Stewartville, Region Three but a quick response from the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) averted disaster, according to the Government Information Agency (GINA).
In a statement, GINA said that the high tides caused a sluice door to fracture but the quick response averted any disastrous outcome. The release quoted the Agriculture Manager of the Uitvlugt Estate, Devindra Kumar as stating that the estate has the responsibility of maintaining the sluice door. He told GINA that yesterday’s tides were approximately 3.27 metres in open waters and this caused pressure on the door resulting in its fracture.
The release stated that materials were immediately being brought to the Stewartville location as the aim was to build a temporary door and equipment and workers were mobilized. It said that Kumar noted that the façade where the water was entering was approximately seven miles long which created a good catchment area and this would ensure there is no flooding. He told GINA that as soon as the tide receded at 7:30 pm last night, the temporary door would have been put into place.
The release further noted that Kumar said that the estate is currently on a programme to maintain 10 kokers in the Region for which it has responsibility. While eight were done, the Stewartville and De Kinderen were next in line for rehabilitation, the release stated with Kumar noting that they were working on the Stewartville sluice but will move to De Kinderen today.
