Four houses – Carr, Cambridge, Blackette and Grant – will all be vying for top prizes and honours today when the fifth form students of the McKenzie High School (MHS) as part of their Physical Education School-Based Assessment (SBA) bounce off an inter-house basketball tournament.
The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) requires persons writing the Physical Education subject at the upcoming examination to have an understanding of any chosen sports discipline.
They also require the students to properly execute such discipline through the running of a competition along with the presentation of prizes.
The MHS students, who are writing the subject for the first time since it was introduced in the education system in Guyana as a subject in 2006, have planned an inter-house basketball tournament.
The games are expected to be exciting since the school as the defending champions of the annual Victory Valley Royals inter-school basketball tournament have some very good players.
One such player is Akeem Kanhai who has earned the distinction of being one of the best junior basketball players in the country and has been creating waves among the more senior players in the country as well.
Kanhai will be aiming to captain Grant house to championship honours but he is expected to receive stiff competition from the other houses.
The top three finishers will receive trophies while the players of the winning team will all receive medals, compliments of former national player and national female coach Abdulla “Zico” Hamid.
All matches will be played at the MHS basketball court and jump ball time is 9:00 am
