Three wells will soon be completed at Onderneeming, Lima and Charity, in Region Two to boost water supply to about 40,000 residents.
Minister of Housing and Water Irfaan Ali made these disclosures during an outreach exercise at the Onderneeming, Charity and Pomona communities on Thursday. The minister told residents that the aged well at Onderneeming will be shut down and a new one will be drilled at about 150 feet from the first to serve about 10,000 persons.
According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release the contract has already been awarded and work began two weeks ago. Charity had been one of the areas on the ministry’s agenda for some time now since residents had complained about poor water supply. The new well will serve about 12,000 people. “We are spending approximately $50M for the construction of the new well at Onderneeming and another $70M at Charity. This has been allocated in the Budget,” Ali said. The well at Lima is expected to serve about 18,000 consumers bringing the total to about 40,000 customers who would benefit directly from these facilities this year.
Meanwhile, Guyana Water Incorporated Divisional Manager for the Region, Ravindra Deonaraine said the well at Onderneeming will be completed within one month and construction of the one at Charity will begin in July.
According to GINA to date more than 300 wells were drilled and built across the regions. Under the hinterland water strategy about 55 wells were dug and rehabilitated in hinterland communities including at Mahdia, Mabaruma and Waramuri in Region One; at Laluni and St Cuthbert’s Mission in Region Four; at Moraikobai in Region Five; Orealla in Region Six and at Bina Hill (Annai), Fairview, Shiriri, Massara, Apoteri, Karasabai and Potarinau in Region Nine.
