– Kanhai named MVP
Grant House was crowned champion of the Mackenzie High School (MHS) inter-house basketball tournament which concluded Friday at the MHS basketball court.
Grant House defeated Blackette House 41-37 with junior national player Akeem Kanhai once again being dominant for Grant House.
It was a festive atmosphere in the school compound with a packed turnout to witness the final between the two houses after Thursday’s preliminaries which were filled with lots of excitement.
At half time, Grant House held a comfortable lead (25-16).
Kanhai finished with 20 points while Colin Bobb chipped in with 14.
For Blackette House, Sheldran Noel had a game high 21 points while national high jump champion Parish Codogan chipped in with nine.
In the third-place play off, Cambridge House came from behind to win 42-32 over Carr House after trailing 20-24 at half time.
Kyle Stewart netted a game-high 19 points with Winston Hall supporting with eight for the winners.
For Carr House, Dellon Campbell had 15 points and Helwin Cameron six.
For his excellent showing, Akeem Kanhai was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP).
The MHS inter-house basketball tournament was promoted by the school’s fifth form students as part of their School Based Assessment (SBA). The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) requires persons writing the Physical Education subject at the examination to have an understanding of any chosen sports discipline.
They also require the students to properly execute the discipline through the running of a competition along with the presentation of prizes. The MHS students are writing the subject for the first time since it was introduced in the education system in Guyana in 2006.
