Residents of Kartabo, Region Seven recently began benefiting from potable water powered by solar energy.
Regional Chairman Holbert Knights said the Kartabo well was sunk in 2007 and last year the solar component was added. More than 200 persons can now access potable water, a Govern-ment Information Agency (GINA) press release said. “Kartabo is one of our riverain communities and we’ve had serious complaints of contamination by miners who dredge in the Cuyuni River, so it became necessary to ensure that clean water is accessible to residents in those communities,” Knights said. He said too the Hinterland Water Strategy is expected to include other communities such as Itaballi, Karrau and Batavia. Also, a new water treatment plant was built at Bartica, at a cost of $480M. It benefits over 10, 000 persons.
Several other water projects were completed at Mabaruma and Waramuri in Region One; at Laluni and St Cuthbert’s Mission in Region Four, Moraikobai in Region Five, Orealla in Region Six, Mahdia in Region Eight and Bina Hill (Annai), Fairview, Shiriri, Massara, Apoteri, Karasabai and Potarinau in Region Nine. Water systems have also been installed at Hotoquai in Region One and at Riversview.
