Some 19 young footballers have been shortlisted for the upcoming Inter-Guiana Games set for April following trials last weekend.
Guyana has been earmarked to host the first leg of the 2009 Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) which will also involve Suriname and French Guiana.
The other disciplines to be contested are swimming and athletics and the games will run from April 23-26.
Last weekend’s trials, held at the Carifesta Sports Complex Ground, were for players in Georgetown and were conducted by Rudolph `Chow’ Hunte, football coach attached to the National Sports Commission.
Several players have been recalled by the selectors including Fruta Conquerors’ striker Manasseh Primo, Alpha United’s Andrew Murray Jr., and the Sunburst Camptown duo Richie Richards and Telson McKinnon.
According to Hunte, the selection panel had a difficult time short- listing the players all of whom gave a good account of themselves.
The short-listed players are: Manasseh Primo, Lumumba Hinds, Richie Richards, Telson McKinnon, Eluin Foo, Clyde Bascom, Bevon Mosley, Andrew Murray Jnr., Frank Crandon, Colin Nelson, Anthony Benfield, Marco Marcus, Wayne Lawrence, Eon Alleyne, Andrea Sookoo, Paul Bobb, Alex Murray, Seon Jackman and Kevon Lythcott.
These players are requested to contact Hunte at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport building on Main Street as early as possible between the hours of 10:00 am and 1:00 pm.
Coaching sessions for the players short-listed will continue on March 4 – 5 at the National Sports Commission ground on Woolford Avenue at 4:00 pm.
Meanwhile, Hunte said that players whose names have not been listed and who are in the school system and have been born in 1990 or after, are also invited.
He also said that players from Bartica, Linden and Berbice will also have an opportunity to make the team though dates for trials for players from those areas have not yet been decided.
In the 2008 first leg which was held in Suriname, Guyana narrowly lost the championship on goal difference to Suriname despite playing undefeated.
