Dear Sir,
I am an avid reader of your Sports Section and am currently following the series `Commonwealth contenders and champs’ compiled by boxing extraordinaire Eion Jardine which is very edifying and beneficial for boxing enthusiasts.
However, in the final installment of the series, the reliable international referee/judge mistakenly included former St. Rose’s High School student Adrian Dodson Carew as part of Guyana’s delegation which participated at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Mr. Jardine probably got confused with Dillon Carew, who, along with Andrew Lewis were the boxers selected for the games in Spain. The athletes selected to represent the Land of Many Waters at the 1992 Olympics were: Najuma Fletcher, Mark Maison, Desmond Hector, Dillon Carew, Andrew Lewis and Aubrey Gordon. However, Dodson Carew was outstanding for Guyana at the Seoul Olympic Games in 1988 losing controversially in the quarter-finals to West Germany’s Reiner Geis by a 3-2 margin. In the preliminary rounds, the Guyanese defeated Libya’s Bidal Esnare by a unanimous decision and then outboxed Yougoslav’s Vukasin Dobrasinovi by a majority decision.
The rest of the athletes for the Seoul Games were: George Allison and Colin Moore (boxers), Oslen Barr, Kurt Hampstead and Marilyn Dewarder (athletes) and Byron James (cyclist).
For the records, Dodson Carew represented the United Kingdom at the 1992 Barcelona Games.
Yours faithfully,
Charwayne Walker
