The last of the quarter-finals was decided on Sunday when BK International Western Tigers and Sunburst Camptown recorded victories in the annual Mayor’s Cup Knockout Competition powered by Digicel at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground.
The two winners Tigers and Camptown will meet in one of the quarter-final matches.
Tigers devoured Uitvlugt 6 – 0 in the curtain raiser while Camptown got past Pouderoyen 2 – 1 in the feature match of the evening.
In the Tigers/Uitvlugt encounter, Devon Millington scored five invigorating goals to set himself up as the leading goal scorer after the conclusion of the first round.
Millington’s run began in the 35th minute when a teammate received a great pass from midfield, dragged it wide on the right flank and crossed to Millington in front of the goal who made no mistake in burying the ball in the net.
The second half completely differed from the first as Uitvlugt’s defence began to wither slowly and Western piled on the pressure.
Millington’s 54th minute goal came during a goal mouth scrimmage.
With the Uitvlugt goal-keeper Lennox Torrington making a desperate effort to gather the ball on numerous attempts, Millington was able to reach the ball before him and tuck it into the net.
Three minutes later the energetic forward received a good pass from midfield and made his way onto his favoured right flank.
Still unchallenged, he pressed into the 18-yard box and fired one that got past the rushing Torrington. The ball hit the right goal post and ricocheted through the turning custodian’s legs and made its way into the left corner of the goal.
Paul Giles got in on the action when he received a cross from Millington from the left flank which shot past the ‘keeper and which he guided easily into the net to give his team their fourth goal in the 75th minute.
Western ruled ball possession in the second half playing most of their football in Uitvlugt’s half of the field.
During the 82nd minute they got off a few shots at goal but were denied. Still commanding possession, the ball found the firing foot of Millington and was sent rocketing past the defenders and custodian and to its final destination in the back of the goal.
Millington recorded his team’s sixth goal of the night and his fifth of the tournament when he was found unmarked by his teammate who fed him the ball which he launched at the goal in the 84th minute. The ball pierced the uprights with Torrington making no effort to save the shot.
In the feature match of the evening Camptown’s Telston McKinnon nudged the score line as early as the sixth minute when he broke away from the defence and drew the rushing ‘keeper to the right of the 18-yard box before easily placing the ball into the left corner of the goal.
Later in the first half Pouderoyen got a chance to equalise when one of their strikers got a break away from the Camptown defence and only had to get past the Camptown custodian. He tried with an up-and-over and the ball rolled inches past the goal past.
The equaliser finally came on the stroke of half-time with Camptown’s custodian Richie Richardson making an attempt to save a shot fired from the left wing. The ball popped out of his hands and Gideon Payne helped it on its way into the goal.
McKinnon scored the winning goal in the 70th minute.
