A father of four yesterday pleaded not guilty to the charges of resisting police arrest, unlawful assault and disorderly behaviour when they were read to him by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
It is alleged that on March 7 at Georgetown, 49-year-old Morton Saul of 17 Lamaha Park, Georgetown resisted arrest by police officer Kevin Nurse, number 17900, while on duty. On the same day also it is alleged that the defendant unlawfully assaulted Nurse and behaved disorderly.
Attorney-at-law Mohamed Zafar who represented Saul made an application for bail to be granted on the grounds that his client had no antecedents and he was not a flight risk.
Police prosecutor Denise Griffith had no objection to bail but pointed out that the defendant gave the police his address as 17 Pitt Street, New Amsterdam and the court was given 17 Lamaha Park, Georgetown. Griffith added “when defendants do things of this nature, it comes back to haunt them when bail is to be considered.”
The defendant insisted however that he never gave the police any other address than 17 Lamaha Park, Georgetown.
The matter was subsequently transferred to Court Two for April 24 and Saul was placed on $60,000 bail.
