A 28-year-old man sustained injuries to his stomach and head after he was attacked by passengers on a Route 32 minibus just after midnight on Sunday.
Osbert Nigel McCalmon, of Ruby, East Bank Essequibo, was admitted at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC). The man told this newspaper that he’d gotten into the minibus and was headed home that night.
“The bus stop for these people to get off at Zeelugt,” McCalmon explained. I had to get out of the bus so they could pass out. Is when I step outside then they start attacking me and trying to take away the lil money I had on me.”
McCalmon told Stabroek News that a man from the group dealt him a blow to the head with a beer bottle and another stabbed him in the stomach before they escaped. According to the injured man, before the driver of the minibus could render assistance the group of people had already disappeared.
The driver transported McCalmon to the Leonora Cottage Hospital which then transferred him to the West Demerara Regional Hospital (WDRH). McCalmon said that after the medical practitioners at WDRH did all they could for him he was rushed to GPHC about 2 am that morning for emergency surgery.
