A 27-year-old German national yesterday pleaded guilty to the charge of trafficking in narcotics when it was read to him by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court. He was sentenced to four years imprisonment along with a $10,000 fine.
On March 7 at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri, Kai Seinsoth, a forklift driver, had in his possession for the purpose of exporting 2kg, 954 grams of cocaine.
The case was called to the bench and soon attracted a lengthy discussion which kept going back and forth among the magistrate, Seinsoth and the interpreter, before a plea was given.
Seinsoth wanted to know if it was not possible for him to return home to Germany and serve his sentence. The magistrate then told his interpreter that this would not be possible and stressed that he has to serve his sentence here in Guyana.
The Acting Chief Magistrate then gave Seinsoth some time to sit and think about his plea. After some thirty minutes, the case was called to the bench once again and the German national then pleaded guilty.
According to Police Prosecutor Denise Griffith, on the day in question, Seinsoth was about to board a Caribbean Airlines flight en route to Trinidad when ranks saw him acting suspiciously. Upon checking his luggage, the illegal substance was found in his possession and he was later arrested and charged with the present offence.
