Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United and Pele Football Club will be engaged in battle this evening at the Georgetown Football Club ground in the final of the Digicel powered 14th annual Mayor’s Cup Competition in pursuit of the Keith Miles trophy.
Alpha and Pele crushed the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and Sunburst Camp-town teams in the semi-final round of competition on Wednesday to advance to the final where they will compete for the $500,000 top prize while the loser will have to settle for the $200,000 runner up prize.
Pele who has been undefeated since winning the 2008-2009 Kashif and Shanghai Knockout Football Tournament will be looking to continue their terrific form and claim this Mayor’s Cup title while their opposition Alpha, who happen to be the Mayor’s Cup defending champions will be looking to redeem themselves after not having such a good run in the K&S tourney even though they won five titles in 2008.
Camptown and GDF who were defeated by the finalists are scheduled to battle for third place in the curtain raiser of the double header this evening at 6pm that has the feature match kicking off at 8pm.
Both teams will be looking for victory and grabbing the third place prize of $100,000 while the fourth place finisher will have to settle for $50,000.
Individual prizes are also up for grabs which include Best Goal Keeper and Highest Goal Scorer while the organizing committee of the competition stated that there will be added seating for the final night of action.
Devon Millington of BK International Western Tigers who were eliminate from the tournament lead the list of goal scorers with five goals and is followed closely by Pele’s Travis Grant with four goals who has to compete in the final this evening.
Also in the race for Highest Goal Scorer are GDF’s Dwayne Jacobs and Sunburst Camptown’s Telston McKinnon who have three goals each in the tournament which has had total of 38 yellow and four red cards in the 14 games which have been contested so far.
