Mark Griffith, an East Ruimveldt mechanic, suffered severe head injuries last night after he was struck down by a taxi and left on the road bleeding for a while.

The taxi driver, who exited the car and had attempted to flee the scene, was apprehended some distance away and is in police custody. He reportedly told persons at the scene that he panicked because he “ain’t sure wha happen to de man”.

Griffith was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital in an unconscious state and was taken to the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital for a CT-Scan. He was later transported back to GPHC and was expected to be admitted.

Relatives at the hospital said that the scan showed Griffith suffered serious head injuries. His reputed wife, Joanne Raferty struggled to remain calm when she arrived at the hospital and was being comforted by family and close friends.

The woman told Stabroek News that she was at home waiting on Griffith to arrive when she got the call about the accident. While she only had a few details, she said, that her husband was left to lie on the road for “a good time since nobody had any time with him”. According to her, a minibus driver passed sometime after the accident and rushed her husband to the hospital after stopping to enquire what was wrong.

She lamented that persons were close by and had seen the accident, but that no one bothered to rush to Griffith’s assistance. However, she pointed out that a few concerned persons did chase after the taxi driver who struck him down.

Raferty said Griffith is a father of two who works hard. She was praying last night that the doctors would deliver good news to her.
