The top four teams of the recently-concluded Digicel powered Mayor’s Cup football competition uplifted their prizes yesterday at a simple presentation ceremony held in the office of the Mayor of Georgetown Hamilton Green.
Tournament champions Pele FC took home $500,000 while last year’s winner Alpha United settled for the runner-up prize of $200,000.
The third and fourth place finishers Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and Sunburst Camptown walked away with $100,000 and $50,000 respectively.
Pele’s custodian, Shemroy Arthur, secured the Best Goalkeeper award.
He was also adjudged the Most Valuable Player of the tournament for his spectacular performances in the semi-final and final.
Arthur received a three piece suite sponsored by AH&L Kissoon for his efforts and a trophy donated by the Guyana-New York Veterans organization while Pele’s Travis ‘Zorro’ Grant and BK Int’l Western Tigers were named joint Highest Goal scorers after finishing the tourney tied on five goals each.
Pele defeated Alpha United in the final of the 14th annual tourney 4 – 2 on penalty kicks after being deadlocked at one goal each at the end of regulation and extra time claiming the Mayor’s Cup title, their second tourney win for the 2008-2009 season.
Representatives from the other top teams were also present to receive their prizes but the Pele presence was overwhelming in the Mayor’s office with their entire squad as well as their coach and club president turning out.
