The Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) says it will be issuing computer-generated revenue licences from Monday in the first phase of its implementation of the new Licence Revenue Management Information System (LRO/MIS).

In a press release the GRA said it has computerised its operations at the Licence Revenue Office (LRO) and the LRO/MIS will be introduced in phases. However, the new automated licence will only be sold in Demerara.

The GRA said the shift from a manual to computerized system will allow it to provide a more efficient service by bringing about a smooth flow of information to other departments.

Meanwhile, Hema Khan, Head of the Tax Operations and Services Department said vehicle owners in Demerara must buy their licences from the LRO’s Smyth Street office in Georgetown. Additionally, Manager of Excise Tax, Licensing and Motor Vehicle Registration, Wayne Austin said certifying officers in Essequibo, Berbice and Linden will continue to issue motor vehicle licences annually. Vehicle owners are required to buy licences within their respective districts.

The GRA said persons renewing their motor vehicle licence are required to present their TIN, the previous year’s licence, vehicle registration, fitness and insurance certificates. Additionally, persons purchasing licences in Essequibo, Berbice and Linden are required to present their TIN certificate for verification and provide a photocopy of their vehicle registration “to be kept by the certifying office.”

Further, the renewal of licences for vehicles registered in ‘G’ for the purpose of transporting goods, except for pick-up trucks, open-back vehicles and lorries, will only be done in Georgetown. Austin said too vehicles registered in ‘G’ will be inspected before a licence is issued.

The automated licences will be introduced in the regions shortly, the release said. It said too the fees for the annual licence remain unchanged.
