SYDNEY, Australia, CMC – Despite West Indies’ fifth place finish at the ICC Women’s World Cup, all-rounder Shanel Daley says she is extremely proud of what the inexperienced Caribbean side have achieved.
The 20-year old Jamaican starred with both bat and ball as West Indies beat Pakistan by three wickets yesterday in the fifth place playoff to end the tournament on a high note.
“I am very proud of the team and our performance. I don’t think we had a great tournament, as I think we could have done better, but that is how it goes,” said Daley.
“I am happy that we maintained our faith, as we haven’t been on the international scene for a while, so I am proud how we came back.”
The victory was just one of two in the tournament for the Windies, after they won their opening match against South Africa two weeks ago to qualify for the Super Six, second round stage.
Daley was in the forefront of yesterday’s victory, claiming four for 29 with her incisive left-arm medium pace before returning to anchor the innings with an 83-ball 24 opening the batting.
“I surprised myself how well I bowled today as I didn’t start that well, but it developed into something good,” said Daley, who earned the Player-of-the-Match award for her performance.
Daley, who finished the tournament with seven wickets from four matches, said she had enjoyed the experience Down Under and was hoping to return soon.
