A twenty-six-year-old Cummings Lodge man who was found with a packet of Milo that he had stolen from Survival Supermarket and a quantity of cannabis, both hidden in his crotch, was remanded to prison on Friday by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Court.
Another man from Enterprise who stole a tube of Colgate toothpaste from the same supermarket was placed on a bond to keep the peace for six months when he appeared before the same magistrate.
Mahindra Ramsamooj, 31, of Jagan Street, Enterprise, East Coast Demerara, pleaded guilty to the charge of simple larceny when it was read to him by Magistrate Robertson.
On March 18 Ramsamooj stole a tube of Colgate toothpaste valued $780 from Survival Supermarket.
The prosecution stated that Ramsamooj entered the supermarket and was seen by the manager via a video camera stashing the toothpaste under his jersey. The manager raised an alarm and Ramsamooj was apprehended and searched and the toothpaste was discovered under his jersey. He was later handed over to the police who arrested and charged him.
However, Ramsamooj stated that he did not steal the toothpaste but he had picked it up and was attempting to select another item from the shelf with the intention of paying for both when he was approached by a man who demanded that he leave the supermarket. He said that the security guard then told the man to hold onto him until the police arrived.
Meanwhile, Haroon Jameer of Cummings Lodge pleaded guilty to the charge of simple larceny of the Milo but he denied the charges of unlawfully assaulting a female security guard and damage to property when they were read to him by Magistrate Robertson.
Jameer also pleaded guilty to the charge of possession of narcotics when he appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton.
It is alleged that on March 19, Jameer unlawfully assaulted Claudy Wosley and unlawfully damaged her wristwatch valued $3,000. Jameer had also stolen a packet of Milo valued $300 from Survival Supermarket.
He was later arrested and taken to the police station where a search was conducted and the packet of Milo and 3 grammes of cannabis were found hidden in his crotch.
The prosecution stated that on March 19 Jameer entered the supermarket and shortly after he was seen by Wosley, the security guard, stashing the packet of Milo in his crotch. Wosley soon approached Jameer and instructed him to give her the packet of Milo but he cuffed her to her forehead and during a scuffle he damaged her wristwatch. Wosley later handed Jameer over to the police and he was searched and the packet of Milo along with the cannabis was found. The prosecution also stated that Jameer had been before the court previously for other offences.
Jameer then stated that on the day in question he hadn’t enough money so he stole the Milo to “mek tea fuh meh daughter.”
Magistrate Octive-Hamilton who dealt with the cannabis case and Magistrate Robertson who later dealt with the assault, damage to property and simple larceny cases against Jameer, both ordered that he be remanded to prison and that he appear back in court on March 23.
