Dear Editor,
I read Dr Ian McDonald’s article ‘Extra lessons revisited’ in the Sunday Stabroek of March 22.
Dr McDonald’s reference to Dickens’s Hard Times, is an apt illustration I think to
promote his views on extra lessons. It brings to mind Hermann Hesse’s novel Beneath the Wheel, where achievement demands took the life of the child.
Dr McDonald using the novel has projected, in my opinion, a valid argument against extra lessons.
Perhaps, in another article Dr McDonald may find it useful to us to comment on Mr Gradgrind’s view of labourers as being just hands, if I recollect correctly.
Yours faithfully,
Krishna Nand Prasad
