Fruta Conquerors and Uprising stun opponents
Day two of competition in the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) organized Banks Premium Beer Knockout Tournament ended with Fruta Conquerors and Uprising being victorious after defeating their challengers at the Tucville playfield.
The Fruta Conquerors overran Thomas United 5 – 0 in the curtain raiser of the double header that had Uprising getting past BK International Western Tigers in the closing match of the evening 1 – 0.
Led by a terrific double from junior national striker Manasseh Primo, Conquerors stormed through against Thomas who seemed a bit disorganized.
Primo recorded the first goal of his double in the 41st minute, just one minute before his teammate Delon Williams scored to take Conquerors up by three goals.
Along with Williams’ 40th minute goal Lester Peters and Julian Harry who scored in the 16th and 38th minutes respectively contributed to the 90-minute relentless assault against Thomas.
The second half differed totally from the first half goal fiesta – one goal was scored (50th minute) and it accounted for Primo’s second goal and Conquerors fifth and final goal leaving their custodian Oswald Cornette with a clean sheet.
In the Uprising/Tigers battle which began in a rain shower both teams endured for the first couple minutes then the game turned out to be a nail biting encounter with a few close chances for both teams and resolute defending all round.
The first half ended nil all with Tigers possessing the ball for most of the half building up attacks but had them broken down by the opponents and the slippery Tucville playfield. After the 15-minute break the match once again showed matching football but it was Tigers who made the first blunder of the night and paid dearly for it crumbling to a 58th minute strike from Uprising’s Daniel Favourite who put Tigers down by one goal and they were unable to recover.
The action continues tomorrow at the same venue with another double header that has Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United being challenged by University of Guyana in the feature match at 8pm while Georgetown Football Club (GFC) will battle with Black Pearl at the 6pm kick off time.
