(Jamaica Gleaner) Hours after embattled premier of the Turks and Caicos, Michael Misick stepped down, he was on Monday replaced by businessman Oliver Galmo Williams, a member of his organisation, the Progressive National Party (PNP).
PNP Chairman Don Hugh Gardener told The Gleaner on Monday that Williams, a noted businessman, was sworn in at 5:30 p.m. by Governor Gordon Wetherell.
The new premier is a former minister of home affairs and national security. He resigned from the Cabinet in order to contest leadership of the party, winning that task on February 27.
The United Kingdom’s decision to take over aspects of the running of the country and to place all legislative and executive power in the hands of the governor still stands.
However, one of the keys in the platform going forward for the new premier is to immediately deal with most of the recommendations by the English government.
The English recommendation includes beefing up the integrity and public-office legislation in the country.
Misick served as premier of the British dependent territory for the last six years, before his career was tarnished by accusations of corruption, mismanagement and abuse of authority.
