A life support machine is now the means by which 6-month-old Selena Rambarat, who was injured when an ex-lover attacked her mother on Monday morning, continues to cling to this world.
Police have thus far failed to apprehend the alleged attacker, Fazul Ousman. Relatives of the victims had reported seeing the man in the area on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. They have since heard reports that Ousman has left for sea.
Rambarat was admitted to the Children’s Ward at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) on Monday afternoon. She was in her mother’s arms at the time of the attack and sustained an injury from a blow dealt by Ousman. Rambarat, according to a doctor’s report, has suffered damage to her brain as a result of the blow and is experiencing internal bleeding.
The child was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit at GPH and has been attached to a life machine, relatives told this newspaper yesterday.
Kalwantie Kumar, the child’s 21-year-old mother, of Hand-en-veldt, Mahaica was returning home from the clinic that day when she was allegedly attacked by Ousman, a man with whom she had formerly shared a relationship. Kumar’s right arm was fractured as a result and she sustained injuries to the head. Her condition has since improved and she will be discharged from the GPH shortly.
Reports were that Hemwantie Jadunauth, the woman’s 20-year-old sister and their 56-year-old mother, Lalpatie Persaud, rushed to her assistance and were also beaten by the man. Jadunauth was discharged from the hospital on Tuesday. Persaud, who sustained head injuries, is still in a guarded state.
