The second annual Essequibo 50-mile cycle road race takes place tomorrow and several prizes and prime point awards are up for grabs, according to organizer and national coach Hassan Mohammed.
The event is part of the countrywide road race series to commemorate the 12th anniversary of the late Dr. Cheddi Jagan and will start at 9am from Supenaam and proceed along the Essequibo Coast to Charity before returning to Anna Regina for the finish.
Mohamed stated that upright and veteran cyclists will ride a shorter race from Anna Regina to Charity and back and the first three veterans and upright cyclists will all receive prizes while there is a special prize for the first veteran over 60 years of age.
Meanwhile, in the 50-mile category there will be eight prime point prizes and the first six finishers will also receive prizes.
The El Dorado Trading and Suresh Jagmohan-sponsored race will see 2008 champion Junior Niles being hard pressed to retain his title while veteran and upright 2008 champions Virgil Jones and Dexter Wilson respectively will have their eyes on second titles.
Transportation for cyclists and officials leave the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport building on Main Street at 5am tomorrow.
