Georgetown Football Club (GFC) and Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United blew away their opponents in first round action of the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Banks Premium Beer Knockout tournament on Wednesday evening at the Tucville playfield.
In the curtain raiser of the double header GFC inflicted a 7 – 0 whipping on Black Pearl while University of Guyana (UG) suffered a 5 – 0 defeat to Alpha United in the feature match of the evening.
Elton Browne scored the fastest goal of the tournament so far when he got past the opposition’s defence in the first minute of the game and tucked the ball into the back of the net.
UG, however, restricted the attacking Alpha United squad to only one goal in the first 45 minutes and trailed by one going into half time.
Emerick Williams got on the scorecards after the 15-minute break making it a two-goal lead by the 52nd minute.
Alpha never seemed troubled and their play was casually controlled throughout the entire 90 minutes before they pressed the accelerator down and scored three quick goals in just six minutes.
Kevin Smith in the 87th, Quincy Madramootoo in the 90th minute and Wendell St. Hill in the third minute of injuries and stoppages time were the goals which put the icing on the cake for Alpha United.
GFC bulldozed their way into the quarter-final round when they flattened Black Pearl in an encounter they controlled from the starting whistle.
Chad Fernandes’ ninth minute goal put Black Pearl under early pressure and a defence error in the 25th minute added to their misery and left them down by two at half time.
In the second half, GFC went on a goal spree and scored five goals in the final 10 minutes of play completely taking the fight out of Black Pearl.
Michael Rowe recorded a double in the 80th and 87th minutes while team mates Sherwin Smith (84th), Delroy Henry (86th) and Clayton Mc Leod (90th) accounted for the other three GFC goals.
GFC and Alpha United are set to clash in the semi-final on Sunday in the curtain raiser of a double header.
Fruta Conquerors will battle Uprising in the feature match.
Kick off time at 6:00pm.
The knockout action continues this evening with the final two matches of the first round. Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and Houston Stars will battle at 6:00pm while recently crowned Mayor’s Cup Champions Pele FC will be challenged by Beacon United at 8:00pm. (KB)
