CHARLESTOWN, Nevis, CMC – Runako Morton’s appetite for runs led him yesterday to an unprecedented second double century in as many games, the first time in the history of sponsored regional cricket — since 1966 — that a batsman has scored double centuries in consecutive matches.

The out-of-favour West Indies batsman stroked a robust 231 and propelled the Leeward Islands to a seasonal team record total of 596 all out on the last day of their drawn 12th round WICB Regional Four-day match at Grove Park.

Morton’s effort made him the second highest individual scorer so far this season, bettered only by the Barbadian Ryan Hinds, who had scored 240 against the Leewards in the third round.

The Leewards secured a 77-run first innings lead and CCC reached 44 for one in their second innings when the game was called off as a tame draw.

The match result also confirmed Jamaica as George Headley/Everton Weekes Trophy winners as the Leewards were the only side with a mathematical chance of overtaking them but needed maximum points from all their remaining fixtures to achieve that.

The 30-year-old Nevisian has not played for West Indies since last year June – against Australia – and while he aspires to return to the top level, he told CMC Sport his current motivation is to play to the best of his ability for the Leewards.

“I would be lying if I told you I did not want to play international cricket but right now my motivation comes from my teammates and doing the best I can for the Leewards,” he said.

Overall, Morton struck 22 fours and four sixes, and faced 403 balls in his historic 450-minute innings.

It was his third triple-figure score this season and he shared in a 94-run sixth-wicket stand with Devon Thomas.

In the 13th and penultimate round starting Friday, the Leewards will be at home to  face Trinidad and Tobago and CCC will be back home to face Barbados.
