Dear Editor,
The GPA described the late Mrs Janet Jagan as an “indomitable fighter for press freedom…” (Stabroek News March 30). This is not an accurate statement, for I received a letter dated July 23, 1993 from Mrs Jagan, Editor of the Mirror, rejecting my response to an inaccurate Mirror article written by Mr Robert Persaud. In her letter, the late Mrs Jagan stated, “…I have given it much thought but cannot find any necessity to print it.” (Copy of her letter enclosed.)
Rectifying this situation was the work by the late Mr David de Caires, Editor-in-Chief of Stabroek News, who at that time provided the space to ensure press freedom, he having published her letter and mine together in the Stabroek News.
The late Mrs Jagan must have learnt from Mr de Caries for she later made her mark in standing up for the Stabroek News when the PPP Government withdrew its advertising from that paper. I applaud her for seeing the light on that issue.
Yours faithfully,
Dr C Kenrick Hunte
