With the Guyana under-15 team set to depart these shores shortly for neighbouring Trinidad and Tobago where they will compete in the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB)/Clico-sponsored Regional under-15 tournament, Stabroek Sport brings you a Who’s who of the team.
Shaquille Williams (captain)
Age: 15-years-old
Date of birth: 20th March, 1994
Club: Malteenoes Sports Club
Position: All-rounder
Batting: Right hand batsman
Bowling: Right hand off spin
Williams first led Georgetown to the Demerara Cricket Board (DCB)/Nalico/Nafico-sponsored under-15 inter-association title, before he was made the man-in-charge of things on the field for Demerara in the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB)/Castrol-sponsored under-15 inter-county tournament.
As he did for Georgetown, he led Demerara to the title defeating their nemesis Berbice in the second of two matches.
This useful Malteenoes all rounder was a certainty for the captain’s position since his posture and mannerism on the field demands respect from his teammates without him even saying a word at times.
Ricardo Richard Adams
Age: 14-years-old
Date of birth: 23rd October, 1994
Club: Zeelandria Village Cricket team (Wakenaam)
Position: Batsman
Batting: Left hand batsman
Bowling: Left arm orthodox
Adams was the man-in-charge of the Cinderella County team when they defeated Berbice in the first of two games of the GCB/ Castrol under-15 tournament.
As a captain, he displayed leadership qualities that were only surpassed by Williams in the tournament, handling his charges with the greatest of ease, so it was no surprise he was made deputy to Williams.
His useful left arm orthodox bowling will serve the team in a tremendous way while his bating in the lower order can also be an asset to the team.
Gudakesh Khanai Motie
Age: 14-years-old
Date of birth: 29th March, 1995
Position: Spinner
Club: Albion Sports Club
Batting: Right hand batsman
Bowling: Left arm orthodox
Having made his debut at this level in 2007 under the captaincy of his club mate Hemnarine Chattergoon and returning last year under the captaincy of Kwame Crosse, Motie is now in his third consecutive year and wears the tag of the “most experienced player” in the squad at his age.
His bowling which has come on leaps and bounds over the years will definitely be a contributing factor towards Guyana winning the championship or not. He is also a useful lower order batsman.
Hemraj Rudy Chanderpaul
Age: 15-years-old
Date of birth: 3rd September,1993
Club: Everest Cricket Club
Position: Batsman
Batting style: Left Hand batsman
Bowling style: Left arm orthodox
Unlike his West Indies middle order batsman and namesake Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Hemraj will be able to serve Guyana as a useful all rounder in the squad. Chanderpaul was a standby from last year, whose ability to stabilize any middle order collapse just like Shiv, helped him find favour with the selectors. Therefore he will be a great asset to the team, in addition to his left arm orthodox bowling.
Kareem Delon Naughton
Age: 15-years-old
Date of birth: 26th February, 1994
Club: Malteenoes Sports Club
Position: All rounder
Batting style: Right hand batsman
Bowling style: Right arm medium fast
Naughton is making his debut on this team and judging from his bowling in the GCB/Castrol inter-county tournament, he can be a tough customer to handle with the new ball.
Vijay Surujpaul
Age: 14-years-old
Date of birth: 17th May, 1994
Club: Golden Fleece (Essequibo)
Position: Batsman
Batting style: Right hand batsman
Bowling style: Right hand offspin
Vijay is a steady batsman who can become explosive on his day. Making his debut at this level should not be a hard task for the Essequibian who showed during the inter-county tournament that he can concentrate for long periods in the middle. His bowling will complement his style of cricket.
Mark Malcolm Tyrell
Age: 15-years-old
Date of birth: 21st October,1993
Club: Gunners Cricket Club (Essequibo)
Position: Bowler
Batting style: Right hand batsman
Bowling style: Right hand medium fast
Tyrell was impressive in the GCB/Castrol under-15 tournament, where he got the ball to swing both ways from the batsmen and in partnership with Naughton at the top of the bowling list for Guyana, they will be expected to rip apart the opposing team’s top order, leaving little for the spinners who will follow.
Dinesh Kenrick Mangal
Age: 15-years-old
Date of birth: 23 February, 1994
Club: Everest Cricket Club
Position: Wicketkeeper
Batting style: Right hand batsman
Nicknamed the “Turtle” by his teammates, his movement behind the stumps makes that a misnomer, especially when he effects his lighting fast stumping. Apart from Motie, he can be identified as one of the shortest players in the team.
Kevin Ramdeen
Age: 14-years-old
Date of birth: 11th August, 1994
Club: Rose Hall Canje
Position: Middle order batsman
Batting style: Right hand batsman
Bowling style: Right hand offspin
The younger brother of former Guyana and West Indies under-19 batsman Richard Ramdeen, Kevin has shown his love for the drive, especially off the front foot and is not afraid to play that to any bowler, whether fast or slow. He also has an appetite for batting and can come away as one of the team’s leading run scorers in the tournament.
Christopher Surat
Age: 15-years-old
Date of birth: 11th October, 1993
Club: Everest Cricket Club
Position: Opening batsman
Batting style: Left hand batsman
Bowling style: Right hand offspin
Surat is an explosive opener who is not afraid to go over the top early in his innings. He loves the ball coming onto his bat and in tandem with his opening partner, can lay a foundation on which his team can build their innings. The remaining profiles will be carried tomorrow.
