BENONI, South Africa, CMC – Ex-West Indies players had contrasting results as coaches in ICC World Cup qualifiers yesterday, with Phil Simmons celebrating victory with Ireland and Gus Logie suffering defeat with Bermuda.
At Willowmoore Park, Simmons was in charge of Ireland for their win over Scotland by seven wickets, while the United Arab Emirates registered an upset victory over Logie’s Bermuda at Fanie du Toit Sports Complex.
Sent in to bat by Ireland, Scotland scored 232 for seven off 50 overs with Neil McCallum blasting 121 not out with 12 fours and three sixes.
Boyd Rankin (2-27) and Peter Connell (2-51) shared four wickets for Ireland who responded with 233 for three off 37.4 overs for a comfortable victory in the Group A match.
Captain William Porterfield hit a blistering 101 off 89 balls with 12 fours and three sixes and Eoin Morgan stroked 60 at better than run-a-ball rate for the Irish.
In the other Group A results, Canada, paced by an undefeated century (100) from the Guyana-born captain Sunil Dhaniram, beat Oman by 103 runs and Uganda defeated Namibia by six runs.
Electing to bat in Potchefstroom, Bermuda struggled to 187 all out off 46.3 overs with Janeiro Tucker (66) the only batsman to score significantly in the Group B match.
