Speaker of the National Assembly Ralph Ramkarran has said he will not be seeking the post after the next general elections in 2011.
“Two terms as speaker is quite enough for any person,” he told Stabroek News in a recent interview, adding “You always reach an anti-climax stage, if you are not careful.”
Ramkarran, who has shepherded the ongoing implementation of parliamentary reforms, indicated that the work would extend beyond the term of the Ninth Parliament. “Much of the work will remain to be done after that time,” he said.
Ramkarran said that while he would continue to have an interest in the work of the Parliament, the life of a politician is limited. “A political career is not a lifetime career, it ends at some time,” he said.
