Local professional golf coach of the Lusignan Golf Club (LGC) Basil Sukhram passed away yesterday at the age of 54.
Sukhram who was still active in the sport and whose daughter Christine is the national ladies champion, succumbed to a heart attack at the fifth hole on the LGC course.
Stabroek News Director Doreen de Caires who has been associated with the LGC for well over 40 years, remembered Sukhram as someone who was dedicated to the sport of golf. “He was responsible for many people learning to play the sport and even coached his daughter and current ladies champion Christine. He would be sorely missed by the local golf fraternity.”
Another close friend of Sukhram and current president of both the Demerara Cricket Club and the Georgetown Cricket Association Alfred Mentore described Sukhram as someone who is always there whenever he needed help.
“He was more than a friend to me. To call him a brother would be an appropriate word. He was instrumental in me learning the game and whenever I stayed away because of other commitments, he would call and ask for a good reason for me absenting myself from the course.”
Mentore, who was at the time partaking in a game of golf at the LGC yesterday, further told Stabroek Sports that all players present quit the game in a sign of respect for Sukhram.“His loss was very deep to the local golf scene.
The last time I saw him alive before yesterday, was Thursday when I drop him off at home on our cancelled return trip from Suriname. We were travelling there to compete in the Suriname Open Golf tournament, but the strike in Nickerie caused a cancellation.”
Mentore further stated that Sukhram’s expertise on the game locally was second to none and his loss would go very deep.
Sukhram leaves to mourn, a wife and two children.
