BBC Caribbean News in Brief

Tax payers in St Kitts and Nevis have been given a six month amnesty.

Those in arrears have been told that they have until the end of September to settle all outstanding debts.

Finance Minister Timothy Harris said the government was offering tax payers with arrears the opportunity to pay off their taxes without interest or any penalties.

The finance minister told the country’s National Assembly that the amnesty would “bring to the fore and legitimise those individuals and entities that can be classified as tax delinquents and evaders”.

He also described the measure as one that would widen the tax net, yield improved revenue intake over time and reduce the likelihood of tax increases.

Castries clamping down
on credit card fraud

St Lucia’s National Security Minister Guy Mayers has said that he has secured a pledge of closer cooperation among law enforcement agencies in the OECS and Barbados in the fight against credit card fraud.

Mr Mayers said that criminals using the cover of the cruise industry in the islands are swooping down on the Caribbean to commit fraudulent acts.

The minister said the matter had been discussed at a just-ended meeting of National Security Ministers of the sub-region held in Saint Kitts.
