Simmons smashes Merryboys to Carib title in T&T

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – West Indies batsman Lendl Simmons cracked an unbeaten hundred and propelled Merryboys to the Carib Sunday League title with a seven-wicket victory over Wanderers last weekend.

Simmons hit 122 not out to steer Merryboys to 237-3 off 42.5 overs after Wanderers had posted 234-7 from their 50 overs at Guaracara Park on Sunday night.

After staging a 124-run opening stand with Mario Belcon (56), Simmons then partnered Aneil Kanhai (34 not out) in an unbroken fourth-wicket stand that carried Merryboys to a repeat win in the championship and the winning purse of TT$110,000 (US$18,032).

The 24-year-old Simmons, who made his Test debut against England a month ago, faced just 129 balls and struck eight fours and a six in his commanding innings.

Wanderers had struggled from the start of their innings, although national opener William Perkins belted a solid 89.

Richard Kelly led the Merryboys’ bowling with three for 44.
Captain Sanjeev Gooljar (32 not out), Sanjeev Maharaj (27) and Omesh Ramoutar (26 not out) were the only other scorers of note for Wanderers, who picked up TT$60,000 (US$9,836) for the runner-up prize.
