A 33-year-old father of two, who allegedly smacked his former reputed wife in the face several times with a length of sugarcane was remanded to prison yesterday, when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Jermaine Scipio of Grove, Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the charge of unlawful assault.
It is alleged that on April 4, at Mc Doom, East Bank Demerara, Scipio unlawfully assaulted Shellon Williams, so as to cause her actual bodily harm.
The prosecution stated that on the day in question, Scipio went to Williams’s workplace and saw her talking to her ex-boyfriend. He then picked up a length of sugarcane and dealt her several blows to her face which caused her to sustain injuries.
The prosecution said that Scipio and Williams had been living together as a couple but that they broke off the relationship and Scipio moved out of the house a few days ago.
The prosecution also stated that on several occasions prior to this incident, Scipio had assaulted Williams for speaking to her ex-boyfriend.
The magistrate subsequently ordered that Scipio be remanded to prison and that he appear back in court on April 14.
