He was responding to a question in the National Assembly on Thursday. A supplier has already been identified and 1000 such meters have been ordered for a pilot project, he said.
Those targeted for the installation include areas where meter reading is difficult such as river-side communities, areas where disconnections are difficult, areas with elevated levels of electricity thefts and on request from consumers, among other criteria.
Hinds said that GPL will engage consumers and there will be a public education programme.
