A poultry business at Lot 33- 34 , Sheet Anchor Village, East Canje , was on Saturday robbed of $1 million by two men who were armed with a gun and a knife.
Proprietors Deonarine and Deomattie Arjune told this newspaper that the youth who had the gun, discharged a round, which pierced the ceiling of the business place, before grabbing a bag containing the money, and fleeing the scene on foot.
Two years ago, also on Easter Saturday, the Arjunes had been robbed in a similar fashion of $360,000.
Deomattie Arjune told Stabroek News that it was approximately 1 pm on Saturday last, while she was in the cashier booth in their business place that she suddenly noticed the two bandits who appeared to be around 19 or 20 years old. She said one of them stood near the grilled entrance door, while the other one entered the building and discharged a round which pierced the ceiling.
“Immediately after, he placed the gun to my head, while the other one put a knife at my side, after jumping over the counter,” she said.
The businesswoman recalled that only moments before, she had placed the money in the bag and was preparing to take it to a place of safety.
“After they demanded the money, I threw the bag a distance away hoping that one of the ten employees who were around would have uplifted it and run, but they did not, maybe because of fear.
The bandits picked up the bag with the cash and other documents before running out the building. She said they were partially masked with pieces of black cloth tied just under their eyes.
Deonarine Arjune said the business which is one of two outlets, the other being in Belvedere Village, Corentyne, was opened four years ago. It markets poultry products at wholesale and retail prices.
