Members of the Guyana New York Sports Association (GNYSA) have begun to arrive to assist in the run off the 2009 LinWest Games, which are scheduled to be held this Sunday at the Enmore Community Centre Ground.
The games will start at 9:30am.
The New York Association is headed by Richard Thompson, who will be arriving in Guyana on Friday. He made a proposal to the Upper Demerara Sports Committee to inaugurate the first LinWest Games in 2002. Already in Guyana are NYSA Secretary Burchfield Moore and Treasurer John Nelson, who will begin work with the Local Organizing Committee to successfully run off the annual Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG)-sanctioned meet.
Since the inauguration of the meet, where Linden was crowned the victor, the games have grown to attract the participation of six districts: Upper Demerara, West Demerara, East Bank, East Coast, West Berbice and East Berbice.
In addition to the wider participation, the organizers opted to stage the games to coincide with the Easter break for schools, to ensure full participation in the junior meet.
Hosts and two-time defending champions East Coast will be looking to make it three in a row this Sunday.
They will be relying heavily on the President College athletes, who dominated in both the male and female categories in 2007 and 2008 where they won.
