A 21-year-old Berbician was yesterday remanded to prison when he appeared before Magistrate Geeta Chandan Persid at the Reliance Magistrate’s Court charged with robbery under arms.
It is alleged that Sudesh Outar of Patrick Dam, found on the eastern fringe of New Amsterdam, was one of two men who, while armed with knives, attacked and robbed Ryan Jairam of Port Mourant.
According to reports, Jairam was walking along New Street, New Amsterdam around 8 am on Saturday last when two men armed with knives held him up and took away his cell phone and $8,000.
Jairam immediately made a report and policemen on a mobile patrol, based on the descriptions they were given arrested a suspect soon after. He was later identified as one of the perpetrators.
Police Prosecutor, Inspector Donna Grant Fraser, objected to bail yesterday stating that she believed that if the accused was placed on a monetary bond, there was the likelihood that similar offences would be committed.
She told the court that Outar had been granted bail on another offence on Holy Thursday, a mere two days before the current offence with which he was charged was committed.
The magistrate refused bail for Outar and transferred the case to the New Amsterdam Court for hearing on April 30.
