Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday granted bail to a 52-year-old businessman, who was involved in the accident last Saturday at New Road, Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara that resulted in the death of a Goed Fortuin man.
Joseph Boodhan Lall of Lot 51 Public Road La Grange, West Bank Demerara pleaded not guilty to the charge of causing death by dangerous driving, when the charge was read to him at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
On April 11, Lall allegedly drove motor pickup PJJ240 in a dangerous manner that resulted in an accident that claimed the life of 29-year-old Hardeo Persaud.
Lall’s lawyer, Adrian Thompson applied for reasonable bail for him stating that he was a father of two and that he owns a trucking business.
He also stated that his client has strong ties with his community and that he posed no risk of flight.
Thompson said that on the night of the accident, his client was placed on $40,000 station bail and was ordered to return the following day, which he did.
Police Prosecutor Denise Griffith made no objection to the bail application but stated that Persaud was pronounced dead on arrival at the West Demerara Regional Hospital.
The magistrate subsequently placed Lall on bail in the sum of $300,000 and transferred the case to the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court for May 13.
According to a police press release, investigations revealed that Persaud ran out of an access road onto the main road and was struck down by the van around 11 pm.
