Sunburst Camptown and the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) recorded come-from- behind victories to make the final of the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Milo under-21 tournament on Wednesday at the Tucville Playfield.
Camptown defeated Fruta Conquerors 2 – 1 in the feature match of the evening that saw GDF steamroll Pele Football Club 5 – 2 in the curtain raiser.
Camptown and the army team will now battle for top honours in the final of the tourney while Conquerors will oppose Pele in the third place showdown on April 22 at the same venue.
Led by a Clevon Narine hat trick GDF were able to equalize and gain a commanding lead which proved too much for the opposition.
Pele drew first blood as early as the seventh minute compliments of a Shemroy Arthur strike and then Narine recorded his first of three goals which was the equalizer for the GDF and the half concluded with both teams deadlocked at one goal each.
When play resumed Narine’s 47th minute goal which was his second and teammates Hubert Pedro and Seon Nieuenkerk who scored in the 51st and 56th minute respectively made it a three-goal difference before Pele’s Sheldon Holder scored in the 64th minute.
The final face of the game was then set when Narine recorded his hat trick in the 77th minute of play that rebuilt their unassailable lead with the regulation time whistle quickly approaching.
In the Camptown/Conquerors encounter both teams matched each other’s moves but it was Conquerors who took the early lead in the seventh minute from a goal mouth scrimmage when Odel Williams found an opening and got it past Camptown’s goal keeper Richie Richardson.
Camptown’s equalizer came in the 56th minute from a Bevon Mosley strike taken after the ball was crossed into the 18-yard box and given back to him by team mate Telson McKinnon who later suffered a hamstring strain which forced him to leave the field.
Conquerors were then pushed on the back foot with only ten minutes to go in the game when a penalty was given against them for handling in the 18-yard box. The attempt was taken by Rashawn Sandiford whose strike to the bottom left of the goal defeated custodian, Oswald Cornette.
Fruta Conquerors’ Lumumba Hinds and Paul Bobb were both given the red card treatment in the 89th and 90th minutes of their encounter for using abusive language towards the referee.
