Dear Editor,
Are we in a position to say ‘thank you and farewell’ to Godwin McPherson?
At least it would be fair for everyone to draw that conclusion after he was quoted as saying, “I honestly fed up with all this. Like I said I don’t have the time. Everyday you open the papers is something and I’m just fed up. So you guys [media] just continue, I done.”
The last two words, “I done” are being interpreted that Mr McPherson will formally tender his resignation as President of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF). I am sure that all persons interested in the game’s development would have the same understanding and would say that it was long overdue.
Several weeks ago when I penned a letter outlining the basic requirements for hosting the Caribbean Championships, I was confident that we would not hear any more about the hosting either from Mr McPherson or Mr Kumar. The administration of the game at the international level had advanced so far that it would take a serious administration here for Guyana to start playing ‘catch-up.’
Undoubtedly, there are several persons who have the commitment and desire to get Guyana’s basketball back on the development path. For the sake of the game and Guyana Mr McPherson should give them the opportunity by formally resigning and scheduling the long overdue Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the GABF. When the AGM is held, all the reports should be presented. Of special interest would be an audited Treasurer’s report.
I find it very unfortunate for the President of an association or federation to dictate that if the Caribbean Championships are being held in a country which would require the locally based players to acquire a United States visa, Guyana would not participate. Since when is Mr McPherson or any sports association President for that matter, authorized to make unilateral decisions of that kind?
And before Mr McPherson departs, could he please sort out the backboard issue.
Yours faithfully,
Ian K. Haynes
