-hit and run suspected
The mangled body of an unidentified man was discovered along the Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara Public Road yesterday morning.
Police, in a press release issued last evening, said the body was discovered at approximately 8 am. There were visible injuries to the body, police stated.
“The body is of a man of African descent, about 60 years of age, and wearing a blue and burgundy checkered shirt, a pair of light green long pants and a pair of brown boots”, the release stated.
A post-mortem will be conducted on the body shortly and police are awaiting results. The body is at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) mortuary.
Hospital sources told this newspaper yesterday that the body arrived at GPH shortly before 10 am and “was a sight to see” because several wounds could be seen and both legs appeared to be broken.
The deceased man’s feet, according to sources, were “unnaturally” angled indicating that the bones were broken just above the ankle.
However, while the circumstances surrounding the man’s death are unknown, reports suggest that he may have been the victim of a hit and run. A police source informed this newspaper last evening that the deceased “may very well be the victim of an accident”. The body’s proximity to a high traffic zone and “other evidence” at the scene, the source said, point to a road accident.
Up to press time last night the man remained unidentified.
