The mangled body found on the Turkyen Public Road early Sunday morning has been identified as 70-year-old Leroy Bobb New Market Street, North Cummingsburg.
Police, in a press release issued yesterday, identified the man as Leroy Grumble and said investigations are continuing.
When Stabroek News visited the man’s Lot 7 New Market Street home yesterday his sister, Jean Grumble, said her brother had lived with her and the last time she saw him was on Saturday morning. She her brother’s name was Leroy Bobb and while she is not sure where he left to on Saturday morning it was not unusual for him to leave the house.
However, what was unusual was his failure to return home on Saturday and that got her very worried.
“I stand at the gate at twelve o’clock on Saturday night looking out for him,” the woman said yesterday. She said the retired stevedore was out on Friday and he went home that evening and told them he met a friend who was visiting from overseas and that the friend bought him some beers and gave him $2,000. “He said he and the man was drinking at Sweet Point and how the man tell him to go back the next day. So we thought is the man he left to meet but we ent know how he end up till at Turkyen,” one of the man’s nieces said. The relatives said that on Sunday evening they heard that it was on the news that a body had been found and they viewed the newscast yesterday morning and decided to visit the funeral home.
His sister said when she visited Lyken Funeral Home officials told her she needed a police officer to accompany her to view the body. “My son left to go to Sparendaam Police Station for a police and up to now he ent come back. So I don’t know if he went and see the body but up to now I ent see the body,” the woman said.
Relatives said that they have received unconfirmed reports that the man was hit by a minibus that drove away.
When the man’s body was found it had several injuries including what was believed to broken legs.
His relatives described him as a “nice, easy-going person.”
Jean Grumble said her brother had one son who is in Canada.
