The Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Guyana (FITUG) has condemned the shooting of the Judicial Manager of CLICO (Guyana) Maria van Beek.
According to a release from the body, a motive for the shooting can never be understood much less accepted in a still civilized and democratic society such as ours. In the release, FITUG stated that notwithstanding her recent appointment which was occasioned by the financial debacle that has befallen CLICO, or whether anyone has an interest in silencing her views or findings, the organization regards van Beek as an employee of an agency, a senior worker of a specific category.
The release further states that the work of assassins, paid agents or persons who may have lots to lose or who may wish to evade scrutiny or exposure, cannot impinge van Beek’s right to work and the body is calling on the Guyana Police Force to relentlessly investigate the shooting. The body notes that attempted murder has no place in society, whatever persons’ differences are or no matter how great persons’ loss of funds or pride may be.
FITUG wished van Beek a speedy recovery and early return to work.
