Victim of the nets: This Leatherback turtle lay dead on the Georgetown seawall at Kingston yesterday, the damage to its back suggesting it had been a victim of fishing nets. A representative of the Guyana Marine Turtle Conservation Society (GMTCS) told this newspaper yesterday that the turtle was not fully matured and had probably been dead for two days. The representative revealed that for the current nesting season some 60 leatherbacks had already been caught in fishing nets, especially in the Shell Beach area. Optician Don Gomes, who was conducting a clean-up at the seawall yesterday had indicated that he would burn the turtle’s carcass. However, the GMTCS representative said it should be pushed back out in the ocean as it could serve as food for other sea creatures. (Photo by Jules Gibson)
