– tournament to bowl off tomorrow
All three counties have selected their respective squads to contest this year’s Guyana Cricket Board (GCB)/GTM sponsored under-19 Inter-county three-day competition which is scheduled to commence tomorrow at the Anna Regina Community Centre ground.
In the first match, Essequibo who created an upset victory over Demerara at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary, will be looking to repeat that achievement to get their campaign off on a positive note.
The Royston Alkins-led team includes five players from last year’s team in Alkins, Ravendra Parsram, Herrell Greene, Rovi Harris and Floyd Henry.
Add the talented left arm orthodox spinner Anthony Adams who spun webs around Demerara’s batsmen in last year’s GCB/Clico under-17 Inter-county tournament where he got a hat-trick, Dwayne Singh and Rensford Beaton and certainly the work of the Orin Bailey coached Demerara side would be cut out for them.
In light of what happened in last year’s match, the Jeetendra Sookdeo-led Demerara team would definitely be seeking to prevent a reccurrence of such results.
This means that both Sookdeo and opener Trevon Griffith, who were members of the Guyana Under-19 team which contested the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB)/TCL-sponsored regional under-19 tournament in Barbados last year, will be expected to carry the batting for their side.
With Vickesh Dhaniram, Rajendra Nickbarran, Ryan Rajmangal and Delon Fernandes in the lineup, Essequibo would definitely have to think twice about repeating last year’s upset in front of their home crowd.
The Demerara bowling lineup rests heavily on the shoulders of the rapidly improving national Under-17 fast bowler 16 year-old Seon Daniels and with the left arm swing of Andre Stoll, medium pacer Carl Rambharose and spinners Totaram Bishun, Ricardo Devers and West Indies under-15 spinner Amir Khan in the lineup, Essequibo should expect a tough battle on their hands.
Meanwhile, defending champions Berbice wasted no time in naming a strong 21-man squad from which their final 14 will be chosen.
Among the squad are national under-19 all-rounders Seon Hetmyer and Jonathan Foo, wicketkeeper Anthony Bramble and fast bowlers Keyron Fraser and Keon Joseph, while Alex Amsterdam, Harrinarine Chattergoon, Manoj Pooranauth and Joemal La Fleur find themselves among the bunch contending for a place in the final 14.

Berbice’s final 14 will be chosen from: Eon Hooper, Harrinarine Chattergoon, Dominic Ricky, Rafael Estriado, Alex Amsterdam, Seon Hetmyer, Jonathan Foo, Manoj Pooranauth, Joemal La Fleur, Terrence Madramootoo, Sherwin Mc Pherson, Anthony Bramble, Daneshar Ramkissoon, Sahadeo Somai, Trinson Carmichael, Naresh Mahadeo, Clavern Beresford, Raun Johnson, Keyron Fraser, Keon Joseph and Mark Lionel.
