The Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) organized second division two-day cricket competition which is jointly sponsored by Cummings Electrical Company and P & P Insurance Brokers was launched at the University of Guyana, Turkeyen Campus recently.
Making remarks at the ceremony were GCA President Alfred Mentore, Managing Director of P & P Insurance Brokers Bish Panday and Michael Cummings of Cummings Electrical Contractors.
Mentore stressed the importance of education for cricketers and stated that the main reason UG was selected for the launching of the tourney was because the GCA would like to establish a sturdy relationship between cricket and education.
He expressed gratitude on behalf of the association to the two sponsors who have continued to give their committed support to cricket throughout the years, especially now that the global financial crisis is at hand.
Meanwhile, the UG will be competing in the two-day tourney and according to their performance they could be elevated to the first division level, but in order for this to happen one team must be relegated from the first division level.
“I am very pleased to be here to continue this sponsorship along with my friend Michael Cummings for the second division two–day competition run by the GCA,” Panday said in his opening remarks. He said that two–day competitions are really important for cricketers as they provide numerous opportunities for them and also offer a balance between the longer version of the game and the limited over form, especially the 20/20 version which can get one carried away to the detriment of playing the longer version of the game.
Panday noted how pleased he was that the university would be competing in the tournament and he is looking forward to the institution attaining first division status. He has also commended the GCA for involving them.
