Dear Editor,
A young lady not more than 30 years old from Suriname visited Guyana for the first time to see Easter in Guyana and spent five days at my home in Grove.
It was the first time this visitor saw horse-drawn carts. Suriname got rid of theirs since 1979.
Since next door to me is a lumber yard, this young woman could not understand how my family and I could put up with the odour caused by the droppings of the horses that pull their carts visiting the lumber yard.
To make matters worse, one day when the visitor was returning from a visit to Georgetown the taxi she came with had to wait a few minutes to put her off so I could chase a small herd of cows that was resting on the roadside in front of my yard.
This Surinamer who is well schooled, asked about environmental protection. I explained there was such an agency, but probably a paper one.
Well Editor, this visiting Surinamer did enjoy the Guyanese Easter with all those kites and picnics, but still left somewhat traumatized having to endure the smell for a full five days.
Yours faithfully,
WP George
