Dear Editor,
I would like to join with all those who are yearning to visit Cuba and enjoy the natural beauty of that island and the hospitality of its people in thanking President Obama for taking the first steps in making Cuba once again accessible to the rest of the world.
However, when he was running for the Senate in 2004, he emphatically called for the end of the failed 50-year embargo against the island. Now he is mouthing the same pre-conditions for the removal of sanctions as his predecessors. This is so hypocritical. America trades with some of the world’s worst violators of human rights, such as China, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, but it refuses to trade with Cuba.
Obama is doing a very good job so far, but his standing in the international community is going to rise or fall depending on his treatment of Cuba. Just removing travelling restrictions for family members is not enough. The world community wants a complete and unconditional removal of all barriers.
Yours faithfully,
Reggie Chee-a-tow
